The Tools Of The Dental Trade

AN ESSENTIAL PART of dentistry is having the right tools for the job. These tools are what make it possible for us to take care of our patients’ teeth, so we wanted to give them some time in the spotlight.

Tried And True Dental Instruments

mouth mirror or dentist’s mirror is an instrument that has been used in dentistry for a very long time. Three of its most important functions are allowing indirect vision by the dentist, reflecting light onto desired surfaces, and retraction of soft tissues.

Indirect vision is needed in certain locations of the mouth where visibility is difficult or impossible. Other areas of the mouth can be viewed more readily with the mouth mirror, even though it would be possible to see them if the dentist or dental hygienist adjusted their body into a poor position. Without the mouth mirror, poor body positioning would occur daily and lead to chronic postural problems, especially of the back and neck.

There are other areas of the mouth where lighting is difficult, even with overhead dentists’ lights. In these instances, the mouth mirror is used to reflect light onto those surfaces. This is especially useful if the mirror is simultaneously being used for indirect vision of an obscure area.

Additionally, the mouth mirror is used to retract tissues, such as the tongue or cheeks, to gain better visualization of the teeth.

Advances In Dental Equipment

Dentistry has come a long way. We now have digital x-rays, lasers, computers, and intra oral cameras. The advances in dental equipment allow our office to spend less time developing x-rays or writing down notes in a chart or book, and spend more time with the patients. We are able to provide patients with a comfortable and personal visit. We are producing less waste for the environment  and are able to see and do more with the technology we have.

We use a lot of great technology and services that allow us to provide our patients with amazing results in minimal time. One specific service we provide is the “one-visit dental crowns” or CEREC crowns.

WHAT ARE CEREC CROWNS?

First off, let’s cover the basics of a crown. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that’s placed over the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, or improve its appearance. If you have a weakened tooth, a crown may be needed to protect it from breaking or to hold together the cracked tooth.

CEREC crowns provide a beautiful looking tooth in just one single visit. This is why we call them, one-visit dental crowns. In the course of one visit, we are able to diagnose and prepare the damaged tooth, create an optical impression of the tooth, and use our state-of-art CEREC machine to design your restoration. CEREC crowns are metal-free, and can help to preserve a healthy, natural tooth structure.

HOW DOES THE CEREC TECHNOLOGY WORK?

We have a high-tech, CEREC machine in the office that provides us with the technology to create strong, customized, tooth-colored ceramic crowns for your teeth, in one single appointment. The CEREC crowns look and feel like your real teeth with their enamel-like material. They are permanently bonded to your teeth with no discomfort and no wait, perfect for someone who is always on-the-go!

Our Doc’s Favorite Tools

Our Doc’s favourite tool is the Intra Oral Camera. This small device allows us to take pictures of your teeth and view them on our television. A picture is worth a thousand words, and our patients are actually able to see what it is we are concerned about and understand the treatment we are recommending.

These Tools Are For You!

All these tools we use in our practice are there to benefit you, our patients. Our top priority is giving your smile the care it needs to stay healthy for life. Make sure you’re scheduling your regular dental appointments so that you can take full advantage of our practice’s tools and expertise!

We look forward to seeing you at your next appointment!
